SRAM is faster than DRAM but DRAM consumes less power and uses less space. Volatile memory loses information when the power is shut off. Nonvolatile memory does not.

likewise write input must be kept activated. When reading, correct data may not appear until sufficient time has elapsed, called the access time. You must read input activated during this process. There are 2 main types of memory: DRAM which requires regular refreshing every few ms and SRAM which has cells that can be thought of as latches.

When writing, correct data must be applied to input for a sufficient time, called the cycle time.

To write a word, apply the address bits to the address lines then apply the data to bits to the data inputs, and activate the write input. To read a word apply the address bits, activate the read input. Some chips promote a memory enable or chip select input and a read write input.

Random access memory or RAM is so called because we can directly access any part of the memory. A byte is a group of 8 bits. A word is typically an integer number of bits.

Read only memory or ROM is an example of a programmable logic device or a PLD. Programming is storage or information in memory. ROM can not be rewritten durring normal operation.

Memory and programmable logic: Components of more complex synchronous sequential systems. Memory is organized into words and it transferable into registers in a processing unit such as a processor. Intermediate and final results are stored in memory.
